High School Rules & Mechanics

These resources are designed to you up to date on the latest rules, best practices, and helpful reminders for the season. From game mechanics and officiating tips to meeting updates and equipment guidelines, you’ll find practical information to support your role as a referee on and off the field.

Coaching Staff Reminder

Please ensure that the Head Coach attends the Pre-Game Sportsmanship Meeting during the coin flip with team Captains. This is not a role that may be fulfilled by an Assistant Coach.

Additionally: at no time should minor children of any of the coaching staff be allowed to sit or stay on the bench of the team. Children should be with their parents only in the stands. The rules do NOT allow for them to be at, on, or near the field without direct supervision from the non-coaching parent or guardian.

In-Season Reminders

  1. Referees in high school are required to inspect the field and equipment. Fixing holes in the nets, side netting not anchored, goals not weighted or tied down and proper bench placement come to mind. Additionally, proper inflation of the game balls and a discussion with the official Timer only makes sense.
  2. Officials that use Comms need time to sync the devices before the match begins. If you are Assisting, please arrive at least 30 minutes before the match time to help facilitate this need.  If you get there early you can help inflate the game balls and remove this task from the center referee.
  3. Proper signals in the Dual: Whether using Comms or not, please use the proper signals to keep your partner informed about what the restart is, who has the throw-in, delay play until substitutions are complete. Proper communication is a hallmark of a GCSOA Referee and this also properly informs the coaches and players as well.

Answer: 12-6-1-i

On Page 67 of the 2025-26 NFHS Rule Book

i. - Exhibiting Violent Conduct:

1. Violent conduct occurs when a player uses or attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball.

Note: re-watch the video and note the position of the opposing attackers head. At no time is he looking at the ball, rather he measures the GK and makes a direct run straight into him.

Officials should note that failure to Eject this player opens up the match to equal retaliation against the opposing team [Black] goalkeeper.

Incidents like this must be dealt with firmly and decisively in a high school game or match control is at risk. An ejection is the correct call.
